History

Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija

Welcome to our newly refurbished website.  Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija is a theatrical group which was founded by local village people who with great passion and on a purely voluntary basis began to practice their hobby, that of drama.  When the theatre saw its final touches being put in place in 1979, these members thought of giving some form of organization to their productions and set up a committee in 1980, whose first production was a light opera ‘Fior di Loto’.  Up till 1990 Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija was much more focused on this theatrical genre.

In 1991 Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija changed their style and started producing some of the most epic plays on the local island, with the first of the series being ‘Is-Salib tal-Fidda’ which was a hit amongst theatre lovers.  From there onwards, Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija never looked back and have kept holding until this very day at least two plays a year, with the season opener in November and another play in the Easter period.  The mastermind behind all this work is without doubts Archpriest Mons. Carmelo Mercieca, whose experience and love towards drama helped the Ghaqda to move further on.

Nowadays, Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija is made up of various actors, story writers and backstage hands who all work for one goal: that of producing quality productions.  Although most of the members forming this group are from Xewkija, Ghaqda Drammatika Xewkija is open for anyone who love theatre and all that goes with it.  So all those interested in forming part of this theatrical group or wish to be part of any upcoming production are to send us an email on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Centru Parrokjali Xewkija

The recurring dream of the whole village of Xewkija was the building of a new Church which could hold the continuous increase in population and a new Parish Centre next to the church, both which dreams were initiated under former Archpriest Mons. Guzepp Grech and finished under current Archrpriest Mons. Carmel Mercieca.

This project required a great deal of work, but the enthusiasm shown by the Xewkija people was an injection of faith to all those who thought that this dream was impossible.  In May 1976 the dismantling of the old Parish Centre begun and on a purely voluntary basis, just as they have previously done in the building of the new Church, the locals started to give the new Parish Centre life.

Architect Joseph Dimech was entrusted with the planning and the design of this project whilst Cikku Cini with the help of families Farrugia and Ciantar were those responsible to give Dimech’s ideas life.

Progress on the building of the Parish Centre was seen as early as Christmas 1977 where the first part of the project was completed with the building of the first storey. Six months later, on June 1978, midway through the first Centenary festivities, the first storey was ready and functional.  All this thanks to Joseph Attard and other voluntary workers who worked continuously. Three months later, hence in September of the same year, the Parish Centre was used for the first time to hold the annual Youths Week (Ġimgħa taż-Żgħażagħ).  In the 1979 works on the second storey of the Parish Centre were terminated and during the final months of that same year, the final decorations of the theatre were assigned to Mr. Carmel Grech.

Worth mentioning are some of the facilities that this Parish Centre offers to those who use it.  The Parish Centre disposes of:

  • one of the best Theatres on the local island with a spacious stage and a large hall for spectators,
  • one spacious lecture room,
  • two smaller lecture rooms,
  • a bar
  • a workshop
  • an indoor games room
  • a 4 a-side football pitch
  • a Parish Office.

The premises are kept as tidy as possible and as modern as possible to offer the locals the best possible service, which looks at the spiritual growth of the young Xewkija people.
